Prof. S. Parasuraman

S. Parasuraman is Professor and Director of Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, and has had a high-profile professional career spanning teaching, research and policy advocacy functions. His significant professional contribution, spanning almost three decades, has been to bridge the research-policy interface. He has played a leading role in translating research findings into policy recommendations for a range of organizations, including UNESCAP (UN Economic & Social Commission for Asia & the Pacific), IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature), World Commission on Dams, leading NGOs including Action Aid and Oxfam, and numerous Government of India agencies. His chief area of research is related to social policy assessment, poverty reduction and environmental sustainability. He has over 50 publications in the form of articles in international and national journals, books and research reports.

Madhushree Sekher (PhD Bangalore University) is currently the Chairperson, Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. Her main areas of research interest are institutions, governance and development, mainly centered on processes of governing at the sub-state/local level, the State-society interrelationships and the nature of user/citizen involvement in the process through participatory partnerships, and the institutional aspects involved. She has more than a decade of expertise in researching the multi-dimensional issues of ‘governance’ in India, related to natural resource management, delivery of public services, or betterment of weaker sections.

Bino Paul is a Professor in the School of Management and Labour Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. He obtained a PhD in Economics from the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) in 2005. He teaches Labor Economics, Social Network Analysis, and Macro Data Analysis to graduate and doctoral students. His main research interests include the macro-analysis of labor markets, the social aspects of organizing knowledge, and Social Network Analysis. Currently he is working on the integration of macro data on livelihoods, employment, and production in the manufacturing sector.

Mansi Awasthi is a PhD student at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, where she is working on how institutions have affected the performance of political and economic systems in the state of Uttarakhand, India. Prior to joining as a PhD Fellow, she worked as a Research Assistant with the TISS-EPR (R4D) team. She held an internship at the Self Employed Women's Association, New Delhi, where she was involved in their advocacy and policy discussions and conducted research on the survival strategies of migrant labourers. Her interest areas include development economics and economic geography with a particular emphasis on employment and migration. She holds an M.Phil. Degree in Labour Studies from TISS.
