Lecture series on Ethnic Power Relations and Conflict by Dr. Manuel Vogt at the University of San Carlos of Guatemala, 30 - 31 July 2014

Dr. Manuel Vogt will be holding two lectures under the theme “Ethnic Mobilization, Equality and Conflict in Multi-ethnic States: a Theoretical and Empirical Analysis” at the School of History, University of San Carlos of Guatemala, room 303/S-1, 17:00 – 19:00, 30th and 31st July 2014.

by Mirjam Hirzel

The first lecture will offer an introduction to the study of ethnic power relations and ethnic mobilization, as well as a theoretical overview of the politicization of ethnicity in the world today. It will then explore ethnic mobilization in different types of multi-ethnic societies, namely competitive vs hierarchical societies, followed by a discussion of empirical findings on ethnic mobilization and conflict at the global level, in Sub-Sahara Africa and in Latin America.

The second lecture will concentrate on the contribution of qualitative and quantitative methods to the study of ethnic power relations and conflict. Following a critical discussion of how these methods are most effectively combined, illustrated with examples of studies carried out in Africa and Latin America, the lecture will go on to introduce the available quantitative data and the data gaps that are yet to be filled. In doing so, it will present the Ethnic Power Relations (EPR-ETH) data and related datasets, as well as the planned data collection effort on ethno-political organizations as part of the R4D project on ‘Ethnic Power Relations and Conflict in Fragile States’.
